The Counselling Process

Counselling is a process in the exploration of the presented issue and the most effective way in which it can be resolved.

The solutions are found using one or more of the therapy techniques that are available to the attending counsellor. The type of therapy used should be matched to the client and the presenting issue, sometimes it takes more than one attempt to find the right fit and therefore part of the process is searching for the right approach to solve the issue at hand.

Since the process usually takes some time, counselling can never be effective in one session, it usually takes a minimum of 6 sessions to fully understand and begin to resolve a basic issue, and at least one hour per session is required at regular time intervals.

Clients are encouraged to fully participate in the process, as it is usually they that are required to make changes, and do the work  to resolve an issue. Counsellors are there to guide the process, help clients to become aware or mindfull of their thoughts ,feelings, and emotions. Clients are encouraged by the counsellor to develop their own solutions and to put changes in place that assist in solving the issue and lead to a happier more fulfilling relationship.
